Salena, I said over a year ago in a comment on Instapundit that you are a national treasure; many agreed. I read half of "Butler" last night and now I believe, well, you're a national treasure. Terrific book, not just for the Trump anecdotes but the people anecdotes. I not sure there's a journalist alive that knows the gut of America (and Americans) as well as you. Thank you.
I am reading “Butler” right now. On pins and needles even though I know how it turns out. Your description of “the placeless and the placed” is so beautiful and wise. Learning a lot. Thank you.
Thank you for your comprehensive recollection of the events and surrounding details Salena. Great job! Yet so many details out of yours or anyone else's reach that still need answers. Encrypted cell communications on the shooters phone for example. Why the Secret Service allowed a high point only 130 yards away to be unsecured.
My wife and I now live in Washington state but were born in Pittsburgh and moved to Cabot near Butler. When the farm buildings at the fairgrounds were built I was one of the electricians who wired them. We were very familiar with the fairgrounds and were watching the rally that day. I remember the horror and shock we felt.
I remember that moment in Butler much like I remember the moment when my 1st grade class heard over the intercom system that President Kennedy had been shot. Mr. Everett, our principal, asked that we observe a long moment of silence to pray for him & his family. It almost didn’t seem real and I quietly sobbed like a lot of other children did as our teacher tried to find words. To watch President Trump stand tall after the shooting & raise his fist felt surreal.

Lord, have mercy.
